Alien Critic No.7

  1. ALIEN CRITIC 7 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears on the cover of the fanzine, "Alien Critic, No.7," edited and produced by Richard Geis, circa 1980.

Please notice the dead astronaut's helmet; the editor asked me to do this scene and identify the astronaut as "Malzberg". I did it without asking why he wanted that particular name. Barry Malzberg is a mystery and science fiction writer, and at that time I did not know him personally. Years later, I met Malzberg when he started coming to the monthly meetings of The Eastern Science Fiction Association, to which I belonged.

I was always eager at the meetings, to gather round the table and start gabbing. It is an educational experience to listen to Barry talk about some aspect of the science fiction field, or about literature in general, or about the publishing industry. I don't know why I never asked him why the editor of "Alien Critic 7" asked me to make him the dead astronaut on the cover.
